A bases-loaded walk-off sacrifice fly by William Contreras in the bottom of the 10th inning propelled the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-3 comeback win against the New York Yankees on Saturday night at American Family Field.
The Yankees had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th, but the Brewers answered quickly. Reliever Fernando Cruz (3-1) began the bottom half, and automatic runner Garrett Mitchell advanced to third on a wild pitch before Luis Rengifo drew a walk. After pinch hitter Gary Sanchez flied out, Jackson Chourio followed with an RBI infield single to tie the game at 3-3.
Tim Hill then took the mound, and Brice Turang hit a comebacker, but Hill’s throw to third sailed wide, loading the bases. Contreras stepped up and lofted a deep fly ball to right field, scoring Rengifo and clinching the series win for Milwaukee.
Ryan McMahon’s two-out single in the top of the 10th gave New York its brief lead. After an intentional walk to Aaron Judge with one out, Cody Bellinger flied out to left, but McMahon then delivered an RBI single up the middle.
Aaron Ashby (7-0) pitched the final two innings to earn his major-league-leading seventh victory.
Milwaukee had trailed 2-0 before mounting its comeback against the Yankees’ bullpen, having been held to just two hits through six dominant innings by New York starter Cam Schlittler.
The Brewers cut the deficit in half in the seventh when Brent Headrick relieved and Jake Bauers crushed his first pitch 420 feet to right-center for his sixth home run of the season, making it 2-1.
Turang sparked the eighth-inning rally with a two-out single off Camilo Doval, then stole second. Contreras followed with a single to left, and Turang slid home just ahead of a strong, on-target throw from Bellinger to tie the game at 2-2.
Schlittler took a 108.5 mph line drive off his leg from Contreras in the first inning but remained in the game, striking out the next batter. He finished with six strikeouts and no walks, lowering his MLB-best ERA from 1.52 to 1.35.
Paul Goldschmidt opened the scoring for the Yankees with his third home run of the season in the first inning, sending an 0-1 pitch from Kyle Harrison 419 feet to left-center. He added a two-out, bases-loaded single in the fourth to extend New York’s lead to 2-0.
